All Powerful ~ Elohim

GOD is great and powerfulThis week we’re going to begin our series on the various names of God from the Hebraic standpoint. In most Biblical translations, we miss out on some great truths behind the meanings as the English language is quite different from the original Hebrew text. Moreover, we also need to understand that our New Testament derived from the first-century Greek language and uses Greek translations. So instead of Elohim, translations were derived from the Greek language where Elohim was replaced by the Greek word “Theos”, meaning God.

To have an understanding of Our Lord and Savior, it is important to know who He truly is and why we should be excited to follow Him. There are many in today’s society who believe God is a myth. There are some who believe in many gods with many ways to heaven. Political correctness has diminished the very foundation of the Biblical truth and what we “Christians” believe and stand for. There are many pastors who are teaching “feel good” messages to the masses but missing the very vibrant and real truth. People are hungry for the truth. They are hungry for God’s presence. They are hungry to feel God in their daily lives. So as we go through His various names and their meanings, it is important to realize what it means for you and why you can rest assured that God is real and with you this very moment.

Today, let’s take an inside look at God’s name of Elohim. Elohim is found 2602 in the Hebrew Bible. It stands for the One True God. It denotes majesty, honor, fullness…that He is God in the fullest sense of the word. He is God of gods who created everything from the beginning.

Genesis: 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Deuteronomy 10:17 For the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty…

The oldest Semitic word is EL. El means God. Its base meaning is strength or power. “El” is the Strong one…the Deity (God), the Honorable Master of all.

By being told that God is Elohim, it lets us know that He is the one true creator that through the power of His words and strength; His fullness came upon us and is with us every day. He was there in the beginning, He is with us now in all our daily tasks and He will be with us in the future. He knows everything from the beginning and knows exactly what you need, when you need and how to get it to you.

Psalm 91: I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Jeremiah 32: 38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: 39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

Psalm 45:6 Your throne, O God (O Elohim), is forever and forever.

In The Craziest Moment

Early yesterday morning, as we heard a loud crash and ran to see, we quickly realized something was terribly wrong. At first, we thought we were dealing with an intruder as it sounded like a very big crash. What we actually heard was my dad falling when he had blacked out and was unable to cry for help. As my mom rushed to the phone to dial 911, I was holding onto my dad with all my might trying to make sure he didn’t fall any further. As dad became conscious enough to realize something was wrong, being the stubborn man he is, he tried to get up and walk. While begging him to sit down, unexpectedly another blackout occurred and I found myself trying to do everything in my power to hold him up so he didn’t hit the floor. There were no warnings to what we encountered. There were no signs that would have given us a glimpse of what we were about to face.

As the paramedics rushed through the house, they found themselves staring at a very clammy sweaty man who could not comprehend what was happening. The paramedics rushed my dad to the hospital. For the remainder of the day, he was whisked from one end of the hospital to the other having tests being performed to try and figure out the cause of the blackouts.

While dad was being wheeled for another test, mom and I decided to take a break and get some air. As we walked down a hall, I had an overwhelming sense to stop and turn back. Now of course, I’m not in the right mind frame to determine what was happening but when God speaks, I always try to listen. So I asked mom to hold on a second and I turned back. When I did, I noticed a young lady sitting in a waiting room. She was doing everything she could to compose herself. I instantly found myself by her side asking if she needed help. And then that’s when the tears started flowing. She explained that she came to the waiting room to take a minute for herself as they had just lost her grandfather. As mom came to my side, somehow – some way we had the strength to be there for this young lady. We started hugging her and just listening, letting her speak to strangers without judgement. Letting her show all her emotions so that she too could find the strength in helping her family through their difficult time.

It is in moments like these that you have absolutely no clue why this happens. We had heard the code blue. We had instantly prayed for the family and the doctors, yet at the time of hearing the commotion, I found myself being grateful that it wasn’t dad.

But there in a tiny waiting room, we found ourselves caught up in this young lady’s hurt and pain…comforting, loving, and hugging until her strength returned to face all the decisions they were finding themselves unexpectedly having to make the day before Thanksgiving.

A while later, we ran into this young lady’s family as they were being whisked to the funeral hall. The young lady looked up with such grateful eyes and whispered a soft thank you to mom and I. In the middle of their sadness, the young lady had an uncompromising peace found on her face that the other family members did not. She was going to be the rock in the middle of the family’s turmoil. God was using her to bring comfort and peace to the family.

So as you sit down to your Thanksgiving meal, I pray that Thanksgiving has a whole new meaning for you today and I hope that you realize that there is so much to be thankful for. Whether you are with family or you find yourself miles way…be thankful to the Lord for he knows the how, why and when. He will always place us where we are needed the most in sometimes the craziest of moments. But if we will listen and obey, it will always work out for someone’s good. Because in the middle of your chaos, help arrives when you least expect it and in very unexpected ways.

Prison Break

Prison BreakA prison can be a very dark and miserable place. A place where you are shackled, tormented, and lonely. A place where you are constantly worried, stressed, hungry, and withdrawn. A place where no one else can go. A place where there’s no where to run and no where to hide. So let me ask…what is your prison today?

Maybe your prison is in your emotions, your health, your friendships, your relationships, your work, your spouse, your finances, your children or a mixture of them all? Again I ask…what is your prison today?

When you feel at your lowest, you’ve lost all that you have, you have no one to turn to, you feel lonely and lost, you have no way out of the current situation…then it’s time for a PRAISE BREAK!

Acts 16:25-34(NIV)
25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”
29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.

Paul and Silas were in a literal jail. They were shackled and had no where to go. But at Midnight, in their darkest hour, they started singing hymns and praising the Lord. Just from that praise…their chains were broken, their wounds were washed, they were feed and saved many people from one simple and amazing miracle God created.

He is, was and will forever be all that you need! When you don’t feel like praying or all hope is lost…PRAISE HIM! For in the blink of an eye, your situation can and will change.
